- Wait for everything to stop completely (heater, salt cell, everything)
- Turn your suction valve to single line (easier priming)
- Tap the lid edge to break the seal, then twist off
Empty the basket completely. Check for cracks while you’re at it – a cracked basket costs $30 but can cause $300 in impeller damage if pieces get through.
The Restart Dance
Drop the basket back in (yes, there’s a front and back – look for the “FRONT” marking). Replace the lid, ensuring the o-ring sits properly in its groove. A pinched o-ring here means air leaks forever.

Open the air relief valve on top first. This breaks the vacuum and drains water back to the pool instead of all over your equipment pad.
For twist-lock filters (like most newer Hayward units), squeeze and spin the locking ring. Older band-clamp styles need a wrench and significantly more cursing.
Lift out your cartridge and really look at it. Clean cartridge fabric is white or light blue. Brown means oils. Green means algae was winning. Torn pleats or broken bands mean replacement time.

The Acid Bath Method
Turn off the system. Close the valves on either side of the cell. Unscrew those unions (there are o-rings in there – don’t lose them). Lift the cell out carefully – it’s heavier than it looks and costs $600 to replace if dropped.
Mix muriatic acid 50/50 with water in a bucket. Always add acid to water, never water to acid (remember: “A to W, you’re okay. W to A, not today”).
Stand the cell on end in an empty bucket, hold the cord up, and pour the mixture through. Watch it bubble like a science experiment. That’s calcium dissolving. Once bubbling stops (5-10 minutes), flip and repeat from the other end.
Rinse thoroughly with a hose before reinstalling. Those unions should be hand-tight plus a quarter turn. Over-tightening cracks them.

That blue glow in your plumbing isn’t just pretty. UV systems neutralize bacteria and break down chloramines, reducing chlorine demand by 30-50%. But they only work with proper flow.
