Which One Actually Works in Indiana?

Your pool has been cloudy for three days. Chemistry is perfect. Pump runs fine. But the water looks like someone dumped a bucket of chalk in the shallow end. Your neighbor leans over the fence and says, “Yeah, I switched to cartridge last year. Haven’t had that problem since.” Now you’re wondering if your sand filter is the issue, or if the cartridge is just this year’s backyard trend. Here’s the truth: both work. Both have their quirks. And the right choice depends on what you’re willing to deal with on a Tuesday afternoon in July.

Quick answer: Cartridge filters deliver cleaner water and take up less space, but you’ll pull and rinse cartridges every couple of weeks. Sand filters are simpler to maintain with a quick backwash cycle, but the water quality isn’t quite as pristine and you’ll need somewhere to dump 50+ gallons when you clean it. Neither is wrong; pick the trade-off you can live with.

How Cartridge Filters Work (and Why People Love Them)

A cartridge filter uses pleated fabric cylinders to trap debris as water flows through. The pleats give you a lot of surface area in a compact housing, which means finer filtration and crystal-clear water when everything’s working right.

Pros:

  • Better water clarity. Cartridge filters catch smaller particles, including some oils and lotions that slip past sand. If you want that glassy, resort-pool look, a cartridge gets you closer.
  • Smaller footprint. The tank is shorter and narrower than a sand filter of similar capacity. Helpful if your equipment pad is tucked against a fence or under a deck.
  • Higher flow rates. Water moves through faster, which matters for spa jets, deck jets, and other features that need volume. If you’re adding a sheer descent or a laminar, you’ll probably end up with a cartridge.
  • Less frequent cleaning. Most homeowners rinse cartridges every two to four weeks, depending on use and surrounding trees. It’s not weekly like backwashing sand.

Cons:

  • You have to pull the cartridges. Turn off the pump, open the tank, lift out the cartridge (or cartridges, if you have a multi-element model), hose it down, reinstall. It’s not hard, but it’s hands-on.
  • Cartridges wear out. Once the elastic bands holding the pleats start to crack or the fabric spreads, filtration drops off and the cartridge clogs fast. Expect to replace them every two to three seasons, more often if you skip cleanings. A replacement set runs $80 to $150, depending on size.
  • No backwash line needed. This is actually a pro in most cases, but if your city requires all pool waste to drain to the sanitary sewer, a cartridge keeps you compliant without replumbing.

How Sand Filters Work (and Why They Stick Around)

A sand filter holds 300 to 350 pounds of silica sand inside a fiberglass or polymer tank. Water enters the top, flows down through the sand bed, and comes out clean at the bottom. Debris gets trapped in the sand; when pressure builds up, you reverse the flow (backwash) to flush the dirt out through a waste line.

 

Pros:

  • Simple weekly maintenance. Turn off the pump, twist the valve to “Backwash,” turn the pump back on for two to three minutes, switch to “Rinse” for 30 seconds, then back to “Filter.” No disassembly.
  • Durable internals. The sand itself lasts seven to ten years before you need to swap it out. Until then, it just works.
  • Proven track record. Sand filters have been the default for decades. Every pool tech knows how to service them, parts are everywhere, and the design is nearly foolproof.

Cons:

  • Lower water quality. Sand filters catch debris down to about 20 to 40 microns. Cartridge filters grab particles as small as 10 to 15 microns. You’ll see the difference if you’re picky about clarity.
  • Weekly backwashing is mandatory. Miss a week and pressure spikes; your pump works harder and circulation drops. Backwashing also wastes 50 to 75 gallons of treated water every time.
  • You need a backwash line. That means running a hose to a storm drain, a gravel bed, or (in some jurisdictions) your home’s sanitary sewer. Not every yard has a good spot. We’ve seen more than one backwash hose blow apart mid-cycle and flood a patio.
  • Bigger footprint. Sand filter tanks are taller and wider. If your equipment pad is tight, a cartridge might be the only fit.
  • Sand changes are messy. Every seven to ten years, you’ll suck out 350 pounds of old sand, haul it away, and refill with fresh. It’s a two-hour job with a shop vac and a lot of dust.
  • Lateral failures dump sand in your pool. Inside the tank, plastic laterals distribute water under the sand bed. If one cracks, sand works its way back into the pool. Cleaning that out is not a fun Saturday.

What We See in Central Indiana

Most of the pools we build use cartridge filters. Homeowners like the clarity and the fact that they’re not dragging a backwash hose across the lawn every week. Cartridge also keeps things simple if your HOA or municipality requires pool waste to go to sanitary sewer instead of storm drains (backwashing into house plumbing is a code violation in many areas because the flow rate will blow apart standard DWV fittings).

That said, sand filters still make sense for certain setups. If you have a large pool, heavy bather load, or you just prefer the set-it-and-forget-it rhythm of weekly backwashing, sand does the job. Service techs appreciate sand filters, too, because there’s less to go wrong during the season.

Common Mistakes

Assuming cartridge means zero maintenance. You still need to rinse those cartridges. Skip it and they’ll clog in days, not weeks. Pressure climbs, flow drops, and your heater or salt cell stops working efficiently.

Backwashing sand filters into landscaping without checking local rules. Some municipalities require backwash water to be discharged to the sanitary sewer. Dumping chlorinated water on your lawn every week also tends to create dead spots (and annoyed neighbors).

Waiting too long to replace worn cartridges. Once the bands break and the pleats splay out, you’re not filtering much of anything. If your cartridge looks like an accordion that got stepped on, it’s time for a new one.

Not budgeting for sand changes. Seven to ten years feels like forever when you’re opening your pool for the first time, but it arrives fast. A sand change runs $300 to $500, depending on filter size and whether you DIY or call us.

Real Example: Fishers Retrofit

We replaced a 15-year-old sand filter on a free-form pool in Fishers last spring. The homeowner had been backwashing weekly for years, but the water never quite sparkled. Algae kept cropping up in the deep end, even with balanced chemistry. We swapped in a cartridge system (same plumbing footprint, just a different tank), and within two weeks the pool was clearer than it had ever been.
